570-million-pixel 62 CCD Camera will scan 300 million galaxies in 5 years
This is the REAL news worth living for: By The Numbers: The Dark Energy Survey’s 570-million-pixel 62 CCD camera will scan some 300 million galaxies in the coming five years. Take THAT DSLR! BBC STATES: “The goal is to discover the nature of dark energy, which is theorised to be responsible for the ever-faster expansion of the Universe. Its first image, taken 12 September, focussed on the Fornax galaxy cluster.” READ MORE ON BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19634700
*** I’ll note just one thing here. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this area of science dearly BUT: it seems so vague and primitive to give matter we can’t see and energy forces we can’t explain yet, such nomenclatures as ooooh “DARK matter” or “DARK energy”…. there may in fact be several laws or combination of forces at work here that have yet to be discovered. It just seems akin to a primitive Hominid who might lump the forces of wind and gravity together with photons refracting in water, and call it the god “Cluthluu – The Berserker, Light Bender”. HEY! Wasn’t that a late 50’s pre-marvel Monster Comic by Jack Kirby?

NOTE: THIS IS EXCERPTED FROM OFFICIAL SITE: “In 1998, two teams of astronomers studying distant supernovae made the remarkable discovery that the expansion of the universe is speeding up. Yet, according to Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, gravity should lead to a slowing of the expansion. To explain cosmic acceleration, cosmologists are faced with two possibilities: Either 75% of the universe exists in an exotic form, now called dark energy, that exhibits a gravitational force opposite to the attractive gravity of ordinary matter, or General Relativity must be replaced by a new theory of gravity on cosmic scales.
The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is designed to probe the origin of the accelerating universe and help uncover the nature of dark energy by measuring the 14-billion-year history of cosmic expansion with high precision. More than 120 scientists from 23 institutions in the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Germany are working on the project. This collaboration is building an extremely sensitive 570-Megapixel digital camera, DECam, and will mount it on the Blanco 4-meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory high in the Chilean Andes. Starting in Sept. 2012 and continuing for five years, DES will survey a large swath of the southern sky out to vast distances in order to provide new clues to this most fundamental of questions.” http://www.darkenergysurvey.org/
